Obituary


Dorothy Ann Denson Mahan, age 92, native and life-long resident of Shelby County, AL, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.

Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL, immediately followed by the 2 p.m. service at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. Rev. Donny Acton will officiate.

"Dot" was employed for many years as a secretary, first at an insurance company and later in the Physics Department at the University of Alabama, Birmingham....

"Dot" was employed for many years as a secretary, first at an insurance company and later in the Physics Department at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. A member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Shelby County, she loved caring for her family and friends. She was an avid gardener and shared her joy of the garden with everyone.

Dot was an artistic painter and seamstress who enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and she loved to cook and share her recipes.

Dot was predeceased by her husband John William "Bill" Mahan, Jr.; parents, Morgan and Maud Denson; and one sister, Emma Jo Todd.

Survivors include Dot's daughter, B. Joy Mahan Zeager (married to Sam Zeager) of Elizabethtown, PA; one son, Murray D. Mahan of Birmingham; one grandson, Timothy John Zeager (married to Melissa Aycock Zeager) of Columbus, GA; two granddaughters, Cassandra L. Mahan Henry (married to Zachary Henry) of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Morgan E. Mahan of Birmingham; four great-grandchildren, Zachary A. Henry, Jr., Owen M. Zeager, Layla G. Zeager, and Annaleise H. Zeager; and two nieces, Denise Goodson (married to Solon Goodson) and Judy Lucas (married to Randy Lucas).

The family expresses special thanks to Hospice Services of Alabama for their loving care of Dot in her illness.
