Born in Detroit, Michigan, Don Smith was the only child of Thomas Patrick Smith and Georganna Bacon Smith. His father dying before Don turned 4, he was raised by a single mother in Oak Park, Illinois during the Great Depression. He served in the Navy during WWII on USS Charles S Sperry and as Quarter Master on USS West Virginia. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Don Smith was the only child of Thomas Patrick Smith and Georganna Bacon Smith. His father dying before Don turned 4, he was raised by a single mother in Oak Park, Illinois during the Great Depression. He served in the Navy during WWII on USS Charles S Sperry and as Quarter Master on USS West Virginia. After graduating from Bradley University with an Engineering degree, he married Phyllis June Walton on May 27, 1950 in Peoria, Illinois and together they raised 5 children. In 1976, he started Debsco Metal Finishing, Inc., and at age 91, finally retired after closing the business earlier this year. His son David worked alongside him for most of those 40 years.

Phyllis, his wife of 62 years, preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2012. Also preceding him is his first born, Thomas Patrick Smith. Surviving are children Steve Smith, David Smith, Barbara Smith and Lisa (Bob) Green; grandchildren Sean Smith, Matthew (Holly) Smith and Bonny Green and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Thomas Smith's partner and her daughter, Susan and Isabella Meier.

Visitation 1:00 PM Saturday, Dec. 3 at Saint Mark United Methodist Church followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM with Dr. Ron Gonia officiating and Rev. Don Cross assisting.
